My plans for next year's online memorial displays

Unfortunately, because of professional obligations in September and October, I wasn't able to get as much work done as I liked in preparing the online displays to my mother. And I've now reached the time of year when I can't read standard-sized print (I'm partially sighted), which I would need to do in order to complete the display arrangements.

So I've put off that work till next spring, when my eyesight will improve. I'll post a notice here when the displays are online. In the meantime, I've updated the index to this blog to include some memorial posts from around the time of the memorial events.

Again, thank you to all of you who have contributed to this blog, sent letters, or came to the memorial events.

A thank you note

I apologize for being so late in updating this blog. I'm a journalist, and I had to cover Hurricane Gustav on the week preceding my mother's memorial events. Now I'm having to cover Hurricane Ike. It's considerate of the storms to pause on the weekend of my mother's memorial events (we'll leave aside the brief, mild appearance of Tropical Storm Hanna in this area last weekend), but the storms have been complicating my preparations and follow-up of the memorial events.

We had a small but warm-hearted gathering on Saturday, and a large gathering on Sunday: the house filled up around noon, and people kept coming in a continuous stream till late afternoon. At a certain point, visitors and cards and offerings began getting mixed up in my mind; if I fail to send anyone a thank-you note who should receive one, it's because there was such a generous profusion of people at the events.

I can't begin to express my gratitude toward those who came by to honor my mother, particularly those who told me anecdotes about her life. Doug and I were also blessed by help from family friends and relatives. I couldn't possibly list everyone to whom we owe a debt, but I would like to make special mention of my brother, who gave a beautiful eulogy to our mother on Sunday, and my cousins-once-removed, Maxwell and Emily Lester, who gave me much-needed breaks to play board games and who taught me new ways to fly paper airplanes.

As I mentioned before, I plan to post an online version of the memorabilia displays that were shown at last weekend's events. What with hurricane coverage occupying my days currently, I can't give a definite deadline for that, but I'm estimating it will be within a couple of weeks. I'll post the notice here when it's ready.

The weather tomorrow

The Greenbelt Alert system has sent out the following weather notice:

* * *

At 11:00am, The National Weather Service issued a TROPICAL STORM WARNING for The Baltimore/Washington region, to include Prince George's County. At 5:00am, satellite images indicated that Tropical Storm Hanna was located 430 South of Wilmington North Carolina. Hanna is moving NW as 20 MPH with winds of 65MPH and higher gusts.

Hanna is expected to reach the Baltimore/Washington metro areas as a Tropical Storm on Saturday. 4-8 inches of rainfall is expected with Hanna and higher amounts are possible. This amount of rain will lead to flooding of some streams and low lying areas. Sustained winds of 30-40 MPH are possible beginning Saturday morning and gusts to 50 MPH are possible. Power outages should be expected. There is a risk of isolated tornadoes on Saturday along and to the east of the I-95 corridor. Any remaining emergency preparations for this storm should be made now.

Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for all Coastal, Central and Southern MD Counties. Travel to coastal areas should be discouraged.

For information regarding hurricane safety, awareness and preparation, visit the American Red Cross.

Additional information and updates from the National Weather Service.

It seems that Mother has decided to go out with a blast. Saturday's memorial arrangements remain unchaged.

Memorial events will be this weekend

Details (if you haven't already seen them) are here.

We're expecting wet, breezy weather on Saturday. Sunday looks fine.

Local forecasters are saying we'll catch the edge of Tropical Storm Hanna on Saturday, but at this point it doesn't look as though it's anything to worry about. If the forecast changes, I'll post about it here.

For those of you who can't make it to the events, I'll be posting here a description of them after they're over. We look forward to seeing those of you who come to the events.

We are so bummed and miss Eileen! We were hoping she would have a chance to come visit us after her surgery and see our new place, we know she would have loved it! And we really were hoping to make a trip out there to see her and get the "Eileen tour" of the East Coast some day, she would know all the best places to visit!!

Heather, your mom was so special, she was a kindred spirit to me! We had so many interests in common and I will never forget that she went out of her way to get signed Judy Collins CD's for me, she knew that Judy was an inspiration to me, and you know Eileen was an inspiration to so many people! She was just so loving and enthusiastic and caring and giving! I will always love her!

-Laurie (& David- your cousin...)
